PART 3

CHAPTER 12

Nancy and I went to freshman orientation together, so we could get a feel for our new school. I couldn’t believe I was about to start high school. It was huge, all of the middle school students in the district transferred here. We were given lockers, and I put my books, backpack and gym clothes in mine, so they’d be clean and organised for my first day.

Nancy and I celebrated my fourteenth birthday before school started. A carnival was in town, so I searched the rubbish in Mom’s car for loose change so we could play some of the games and get some food. I got enough money to keep us entertained for a few hours. Even though it was still summer break, it was rare that I was allowed hang out with Nancy. Only on special occasions or a on few scattered days when my mom was in a good mood.

School was starting the next day. Mom offered to give me and Nancy a ride, and before I thought about it I said yes and gave Nancy a call. It was only when I hung up that I realised that the car needed to be cleaned, badly. I’d been trying to keep the legroom in the front seat somewhat clear, not letting bottles overrun, but the back seat was horrendous. There were old takeaway boxes, crumpled fast food bags, half full bottles of soda, garage sale hauls that had yet to be brought inside, and even more junk.

I easily filled two bags of trash from the back seat, and tossed them in the garage to wait for the next trash run to Grandma’s. I dumped the stuff from the garage sales in the laundry room. It took up a good bit of space in the car, but only added a few inches to one pile of many in the laundry room. I stopped emptying out the car when I had just enough leg space.

The next morning, I quickly hopped out of the front passenger seat so Nancy didn’t have to sit in the back with the garbage. By now she was used to how the car smelled and looked. I’d still never let her near the house.

‘I’m so glad we finally have classes together,’ she said, looking over at me.

Smiling, I said, ‘I know! I can’t believe our schedules lined up so perfectly.’

When we got to the high school, I went to my locker to grab my backpack and drop off all of the things Mom had made me take along. She had sent me to school with several water bottles, a change of clothes, extra pads and tampons, and a bunch of granola bars. I didn’t want to take the time organizing everything, so I just dumped it all in the bottom of my locker, filling it up halfway.

Nancy and I made our way to the cafeteria, where her older brother and sister liked to hang out with their friends. I felt cool because we were sitting with seniors and nobody made fun of us.
